The LASEK (Laser-Assisted Sub-Epithelial Keratectomy) procedure, also known as PRK (Photo Refractive Keratectomy), is one of the earliest forms of laser vision correction. It has been used extensively in the field, backed by excellent clinical data and outcomes. LASEK is a suitable option for patients with irregular or thinner corneas, previous scarring, or those who are not candidates for LASIK. It is also ideal for individuals who frequently engage in contact sports.
LASEK uses the same wavefront and excimer laser technology as LASIK but does not involve creating a Femto laser flap. This means the procedure is performed more superficially, resulting in a slightly longer recovery time.
Our team of eye surgeons at Optimal Vision will conduct extensive screening, tests, and examinations to thoroughly assess your condition and provide the best treatment options.
LASEK (Laser-Assisted Sub-Epithelial Keratomileusis) is a laser eye surgery that combines techniques from both LASIK and PRK. It is suitable for patients with less severe focusing issues. During LASEK, the fine surface cell layer of the cornea is removed and loosened instead of forming a flap, helping to maintain the majority of the corneal thickness. An excimer laser is then used to reshape the corneal surface, correcting refractive errors. Although effective, visual recovery with LASEK is slower, and patients need to wear bandage contact lenses (BCLs) for at least three to five days post-surgery.
While LASIK is preferred by most patients, it is not suitable for everyone, particularly those with flat or thin corneas. LASEK is a viable alternative, especially for individuals involved in contact sports. During your consultation, the surgeon will evaluate your condition and discuss the benefits and drawbacks of LASEK.
LASEK is ideal for patients involved in contact sports who are at increased risk of eye injury. It is also suitable for those with dry eye symptoms.

Guidelines for Best Results:
During the procedure, the epithelium is removed, and the underlying corneal tissue is exposed to a laser beam to improve light passage. Post-surgery, eye drops and a bandage will be applied for comfort. The bandage remains for three to five days, during which you must rest and apply eye drops as instructed. You may experience eye irritation for the first few days.
After surgery, you will be monitored to speed up the recovery process. Contact your eye surgeon if you experience extreme pain, excessive discharge, red eyes, irritation, or a sudden decrease in eyesight.
